As the seasons change, the trends of yesterday will fade away and the new movements will set in. What was popular last year is now destined for that dreaded storage room, or even worse, the landfill. Does it have to be that way? Absolutely not! I have come to realize that there are many items around the house that can serve you and save you! I will walk you through a few steps of how to add value to your home and also maximize the outcome of minimizing the clutter.
Make a list for each task and assign a number to each based on priority. You also want to keep in mind the budget you have in mind for each task listed. For example, the renovation I had begun 4 years ago was incomplete. I needed to paint some doors, install cover plates, baseboards and touch up some paint. The list was much longer, however, now that it was all in writing with costs I could begin to tackle each task one-by-one. Think of this part as you giving yourself a quote to do your own work!
2. TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR DECISIONS
Get your facts straight and do the research for the products you intend to buy. You are doing this to ensure that you will be satisfied with the outcome. When replacing fixtures, try and look for brands with lifetime warranties. That way if the time comes to sell your home, not only will you have nice fixtures but you can add the little details in the pitch as well. For example, brands like Moen, Riobel, and Delta offer lifetime warranties on their extensive list of products.
3. GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE
Ladies and gentlemen. Push yourself to let go of certain items that are not benefiting you or your family. Sell those items on kijiji, craigslist, or any other exchange platform. Believe me when I say there will always be a buyer for random items. These platforms will help you minimize your carbon footprint and add a little cash in your pocket. Take pictures or each item and then post 2-4 items a day, for free!
4. START AND FINISH WITHIN A WEEK
I know we all get busy and caught up with life. Don’t panic! Each week will give you adequate time to complete 2-3 tasks on that long list we made. Do your tasks with family and friends when you need assistance. Enjoy your time doing each task by playing music or listening to podcasts about subjects you are interested in.
5. WHAT’S NEXT?
Once your home is refreshed with the new layout, you want to make sure your new decor is timeless. Usually it is the neutral colours that flourish for decades in a home. People will often ask me; “Is this new?” or “What did you change with your place?” and I reply with “It is simply timeless.”
